Work has begun on extending platforms 5 and 6 to accommodate 11-car Pendolino sets.

The concrete base (just in front of the train shed roof support) for the relay room added as part of the signalling improvements in the 1950's, when colour light signals replaced worn out equipment. Preston No.3 signal box was just the other side of the roof support (where the overhead stantion is locationed) and controlled the new colour lights on the old platforms 6 and 7 (now 4 and 5).
