new Glass Bridge for Preston
To those of a
"certain age", mention of a glass bridge at Preston will
bring back memories of the (formerly covered) footbridge from the
Park Hotel to the then platform 6 at the south of the station.
It seems that the
plans for upgrading Preston Station *did* include a new glass
walkway between all platforms, but spending cuts have put paid to
that idea.
Deltic
replaces Western
Following serious
problems with D1015, Compass have now secured the use of 55022 for
their Western and Eastern Coastal Express tour on 30th
August.

Preston Signalling Sim?
PC
Rail Simulations, publishers of the modern Preston Signalling
Simulator, are considering producing a 1960s version, covering the
pre-Power-Box era at Preston.
Can you help?
Firstly, Martin Cookson at PCRS
would like to gauge whether there is likely to be any interest.
Please let us know if you would be interested in such a product.
Secondly, do you have any signalling information which might help
in producing an accurate representation of the complex system
which was in use at Preston prior to 1972?

Down the Docks
The CFPS's 40145 will
haul a Branch Line Society tour on 10th October, which will see
the whistler traversing the Dock Branch to the RSR. It will be the
first time in over 25 years that a class 40 has tackled the
steeply graded branch and crossed Strand Road.

Wednesday Steam Double?
Unlike last year, the

Preston
Refurb On / Off / On ?
It was announced last
year that Preston Station would receive a major upgrade as part of
a scheme to transform some of the "worst" stations in
Britain. The recent budget cuts, introduced to reduce the UK's
spiralling budget deficit, were assumed to have put the whole
scheme on-hold.
A report in The
Railway Herald reveals that the planned changes may yet go
ahead, especially if a longer franchise is awarded for the WCML
operator.
The full story is
available in the current (free) issue of Railway
Herald.
