THE WEST
LANCASHIRE RAILWAY
PRESTON - SOUTHPORT |
|
St Luke's station was
originally a stop on the L&YR's Southport - Wigan line. Adjoining it
was Southport [Ash St], the first stop out of Southport Central towards
Preston on the WLR. When the L&Y absorbed the WLR and re-routed it
into their own Southport terminus, St Luke's absorbed Ash Street and the
two became one, with separate platforms for the two lines, broadly at
right angles to one another and sharing a single booking office.
Lostock
Hall's BR Standard 2MT 2-6-0 No. 78040 brings the 13-17 Southport -
Preston to a halt alongside the platform of Southport [St. Lukes]. Tracks
at this point were shared with services to Wigan [Wallgate] (via either
the Blowick or Meols Cop routes) and also with the electric trains to
Crossens.
