NURSERY LANE CROSSING

On the climb away from New Longton & Hutton towards Longton Bridge is one of several gated and manned crossings in the locality. Nursery Crossing, in the village of New Longton, links Chapel Lane with Moss Lane and, in light of the extremely high cost of operation, this and most of the many other manned crossings along the length of the WLR would have been ideal candidates for automatic lifting barriers, remotely controlled from a central location. Notwithstanding such specifics, it is all the more incredulous that this particular example will remain in use right up until closure of the line, given that both of the bridges beyond as seen in the photograph, do provide perfectly alternative routes, the nearest of which involves a detour of but a few yards. Hardly hardship to any degree whatsoever, it might be submitted!
