Once a common sight, but by 1964 a very rare visitor to the WLR, is one of the last Fowler 2-6-4 Class 4 tanks, No. 42369, seen here making a very rousing departure from Longton Bridge on 5th September at the head of the 12-18 (SO) Southport - Preston.

A very rare visitor to the WLR by this date (5th September 1964) is one of the last Fowler 4MT 2-6-4 tanks, No. 42369, seen here passing Longton Bridge's signal box with the 12-18 (SO) Southport - Preston. Following withdrawal of all freight facilities in April 1964, the box is normally 'switched-out' at weekends, as is the case on this date.

Probably the last passenger carrying vehicle of any description to pass through Longton Bridge is seen in this view on the northern approach to Longton Bridge station. The 'driver' is a very youthful-looking Alan Castle. Note the appropriately correct reporting number being carried, although Preston Control Office are unlikely ever to become aware of this impromptu and quite unadvertised special working!
